So you think you want to paint! For those with little or no experience. You will explore the basics of paints, paper, brushes etc., as well as learning many basic techniques and how to apply them to your original watercolor paintings.

For those of you who know you love to paint and have some knowledge/experience. This class is for you as you will learn additional techniques and use new materials to expand your skills. 

OIL PAINTING STILL LIFES   Instructor:  Joanne Hall

Basic Oil Painting With Still Life" is a studio class designed for new painters or painters who want to review basic painting techniques. Emphasis is placed on designing elements of still life by observing light on form, developing expressive brushwork,  and learning to mix radiant color.  Participants are encouraged to bring their own "favorite" objects to paint.

NANTUCKET BASKET WEAVING        Instructor: Catherine Ward
Four Day Workshop
January 9, 10, 11, 12        5:30 - 8:00pm      Fee:$275   supplies and tools included
Enjoy this four day workshop with Catherine Ward, Nantucket Basketing Weaving instructor.  You will make one six inch basket with a handle, and learn the art of basket weaving. Bring an old pair of scissors and a can of soup to class.

This is an opportunity for wanna' be artists to try several different mediums before deciding which one or ones to pursue. The class is an introduction to watercolors, soft pastels and acrylics as painting mediums and requires no previous art experience - not even the ability to draw a straight line. Step-by-step instruction will be offered to lead you through the painting process so you'll soon be saying, "So that's how it's done. I can do that too!

Description: Talented local artist, Tommy Vogel, will introduce you to drawing with pastels.  This pastel class will focus on technique, color application and composition.  Students will complete a work in each lesson.  Take this fun class.  Stop by the Arts Center to see some of Tommy's works on display.

BASIC LANDSCAPE PAINTING IN OIL WITH PLEIN AIR       Instructor: Joanne Hall

"Basic Landscape Painting In Oils with Plein Aire" is a studio class with several plein air sessions, weather permitting.  This is a class for painters with basic skills in place, who want to learn to observe how  outdoor forms are affected by changing light and weather conditions .  We will study major land forms, skies, hills, mountains, trees, waterfalls, rivers, etc in the studio so that the painter can translate these forms more decisively and quickly out of doors.  Out door sessions will be held on OBAC grounds.

Creating Your Own Photo Book

Digital Camera Tips and Tricks ($27) (offered Jan. 13 and Jan. 21)
This is a hands-on class designed to give you the necessary information and skill needed to become proficient with your digital camera.  We will learn about the camera controls and work on overcoming common problems such as shutter lag and blurred images. Each participant should bring a digital camera, charged batteries, a camera memory card, and the camera manual (if available). 

Exposure - Capturing Light and Motion ($27) (offered Jan. 20 and Jan. 28
Exposure and focus are key elements in digital photography.   In this class we will explore the following questions:  How does shutter speed affect the image?  How can I determine what will be in focus?  What is the best lighting for my photographs? Exposure is the SCIENCE of photography.

Post-camera Production—After you take the picture, what’s next? ($27) (offered Jan. 27 and Feb. 4)
Snapping a digital picture is only the start of the adventure.  What can you do with those pictures on your camera's memory card?  In this class we will cover the following topics:  downloading digital photos to the computer, organizing and renaming pictures, enhancing pictures with free image editing software and sharing your photographs as email attachments, slideshows, prints, photo books and in online galleries.  If you have a laptop computer, bring it to class.

Editing Digital Photographs – Adobe Photoshop Elements($27) (offered Feb. 3 and Feb. 11)
Learn to edit your images using this home version of Adobe Photoshop.  We will cover the basics of cropping, correcting exposure, straightening the picture, capturing and moving parts of the picture, combining several pictures, and other image editing skills.  If you have a laptop computer, bring it to class.

Creating Your Own Photo Book ($27) (offered Feb. 10 and Feb. 18)
Photo books are a great way to share your pictures with others.  We will cover how to prepare your pictures, pick a publisher, build your book and employ the rules for good design.  Learn to amaze your friends with your publishing talent.  If you have a laptop computer, bring it to class.

Digital Photography Composition ($27) (offered Jan. 14 and Feb. 17)
What is the difference between a snapshot and a photograph?  In this class we apply the elements and principles of design to emphasize the photograph's subject.  Learn how to add interest and drama to your digital pictures. Photo composition is the ART of photography.

Design your own class (The cost is $20 per person per hour.)

MOSAIC BROKEN PLATE PROJECT       Instructor: Kathleen Tucker

Painted Floor Cloth - Learn to hem, paint and protect a 24" by 36" canvas floor cloth.  You may come with a design inspiration from your home (towel, cushion, anything) and you may bring your own acrylic craft paints if you need special colors.  Instructor will have suggested ideas also.  Tuition $40, Supplies $20 for floor cloth, tape, paint, and sealer. Brushes, paper, pencils supplied.

SAND CASTING: MEMORIES IN GLASS        Instructor: Sam Cornman

Learn about hot glass casting while creating a momentous piece of art.  You will cast a creation out of molten hot glass in Orange Beaches' very own sand!  Bring a small object (8"x8" or smaller) to imprint in the sand and learn the glass art of casting.  The memory objects will be used for impressions in the sand and will not be harmed.  Examples of objects to bring: military metals, antique jewelry,  sea shells, your hands! 

GLASS BLOWING FOR BEGINNERS I 
$150   a one day workshop!
Friday and Saturdays,      2pm -  5pm
This three hour class is designed to give beginners an introduction to basic glassblowing.  The class will give students ample hands on experience as they learn classic techniques such as shaping the glass, making basic forms and apply basic color to the glass.  By the end of the work shop students will have made paperweights, ornaments and vessels.  Students can expect to make 2 to 4 pieces, which will be ready to take home the next day.  Shipping is available for visiting students.  To Sign Up for Classes Call 251.981.2787
  GLASS BLOWING FOR BEGINNERS II
$150   a one day workshop!

Building on the skills learned in Beginners I, students will learn how to gather glass out of the furnace and reheat. These skills are necessary for students to start to make pieces totally on their own. With ample instruction, students will make blown vessels from start to finish.   Students can expect to make 2  to 4 pieces, which will be ready to take home the next day.  Shipping is available for visiting students. Introduction to Kiln-Formed (fused) Glass with Karen Dixon

Monday, February 13 and Tuesday February 14    10a.m.-2p.m. each day

Learn the basic techniques for kiln-formed glass, including jewelry and home décor pieces.  The workshop will begin with exercises in glass cutting, designing and assembling the parts necessary to make one slumped plate, a sun catcher to hang and beautiful wearable pendants, earrings, key chains, and pins.  Discussions and demonstrations will cover the basics of kiln-forming, from types of glass and mold materials to kilns and firing schedules.  All glass and materials are included, no prior glass experience needed.

Note: Participants may wish to bring lunch each day
